Leon Trotsky

Lev Davidovich Bronstein, or Leon Trotsky, was born in 1879 in the Ukraine.  When he was nine years old he moved to Odessa to get a good education.  In 1896 he moved to Nicoleyev to study mathematics. In Nicoleyev, Trotsky turned revolutionary and founded the South Russia Workers Union and the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. In 1900 Trotsky was deported to Siberia after being arrested and put in prison for his political activities. In 1902 Trotsky changed his name and escaped from Siberia to go to London and meet up with Lenin. Trotsky and Lenin, once joined together on the staff of the communist newspaper (Iskra), were soon separated when Lenin became the leader of the Bolsheviks and Trotsky became the Leader of the Mensheviks. When Trotsky returned to Russia in 1905 he became a very active leader in the Revolution and even became the president of the St Petersburg Soviet.  Trotsky and many other leaders of St Petersburg were arrested and once again sent to Siberia.  Trotsky once again escaped Siberia and met up with Stalin in London.  For the next few years he was publishing papers such as the Pravda.  Trotsky then returned to Russia and became second in command to Lenin in the Bolshevik party.  He later became the People's Commissar for Military and Naval Affairs and he even founded the Red Army.  After Lenin’s death, Stalin was put in control of the Soviet Union. Stalin disliked Trotsky, therefore, he expelled him from the Excecutive Committe of Comintern, banished him to Alma Ata in Kazakhstan, and then in 1929 deported him to Turkey.  Trotsky had an opposite idea of communism than Stalin.  He used his writings to go against Stalin’s ideas and collect followers that agreed with his own thoughts on communism. His followers were known as the Trotskyists. One man, Diego Rivera, greatly supported Trotsky and helped him create a home in Mexico after Trotsky had trouble finding a country because he was a communist leader banned from his homeland.  In 1940, a follower of Stalin attacked Trotsky in his office with an ice-axe.  The next day Trotsky died.

·        Czar Nicholas II lived from 1869-1918 in Russia. He was a very smart and well educated person who was in the high class. He was secluded from the outside world so he had no idea how people lived. He was heir to the throne, but he did not think that he was ready to rule Russia. He was Czar of Russia. Other than his wife he was very lonely. He did not want anything to happen to his country or family and he knew he was a big target for assassination. He was thought of as a failure because he always hesitated on decisions and did not know what was wrong or right for his country. After World War I began Czar took command of the army and left the government. During the war the government and country fell apart. Vladimir Lenin

Vladimir was born in April 1870. He has a some what difficult adolescence. His father dies when Vladimir is only 16 and a year later his brother was executed. This man was a writer. He argued that capitalism was not the way that the country should have been run. He also thought that there should be time spent on focusing on a new party of a new type. The main focus of this was to have something that the working class could have and it would be a great revolution. This all lead to what makes him famous or one of his most famous works, “vanguard of the proletariat.” The book is also considered to be a somewhat attack on the Revisionism. This man was very active in politics during his life, for example he was in social groups as the League of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class, Russian Social Democratic Labor Party, Second Congress of the RSDLP, and a couple more. This man accomplished many things and many works or books in his life time. Valdimir Lenin had a part in many of the political aspects of Russia and he used his works/books and his words to his advantages and do to that he was able to have a voice. When the Soviet government was formed Lenin was the Chairman and one of the first things he does with his new power is dissolve the Constituent Assembly, and ends hostilities with Germany. Sadly he died because of his 4th stroke and his body could not take it.

Propaganda during Stalin’s time

Stalin political career has been very controversial and many historians fought over how he ran the government in the early 1900’. In 1917 Stalin gained the position of the people’s commissar for nationalities. He was one of the people Lenin would first look to fir this position. He held that position in the government for about 4 years from 1919 to about 1923. Stalin was able to bring jobs and opportunities to people when there was no hope.

As Stalin was trying to change his organization into a source of politic power, he and his leader go in to many minor political issues. Stalin’s basic agenda was, “socialism in one country”. Stalin thought that it would be easier and better if they just used his idea which was to only take it one country at a time so that we could make it work. Stalin used propaganda to his advantage after Lenin died. He trued against his friends and rivals and once he did that, then he gained power and control. Declaring that he was Lenin’s disciple was a great advantage to him and that is how he gained control. Once Stalin used power he thought that fear and violence was the one way or the necessary element in keep peace and to contract socialism. He thought that dictatorship was the only way that things would work in the country to reach socialism or democracy. He also killed millions of people and ruled with a strong hand.

Stalin’s Purges

Stalin was the supreme leader of the Soviet Union. The world recognizes that the purges that happened during Stains rule were horrible and one of the worlds most extreme cases of genocide and gendercide ever. With Stalin’s Purges came these concentration camps inside the country and were very harsh and dangers to the nation. In some cases most of the men in the town were rounded up and then arrested and or probable sentenced to death. Police would surround them and then accuse every single on of them from the ages 16 to 60 with sabotage. In addition, more then likely they would go to jail or die. This mass terror did not just affect the men. The wives suffered as well, they only counted for a small part. They were still hardship for them though, they mostly lost there jobs there rooms, and their permits to sell possessions. In some cases they moved in or asked for help from there relatives. 7 million Purge victims came from labor/death camps, and theta is not counting the hundred thousands of who where killed and just slaughtered outright. All and all this time was a very depressing and fritting time for any one that lived near Stanly rule.
